On Monday, May 5, 2023, U.S. Congresswoman Judy Chu, from the 28th District of California, visited the Young Democrats at Claremont High School in ACSA Region 15. In 2009, she became the first Chinese American woman elected to Congress in history. The Congresswoman spent an hour with the students as she discussed many topics, such as gun violence, which her district recently experienced firsthand with the attack in Monterey Park. She also discussed life in the House of Representatives in Washington, D.C., today and legislation she has authored, such as the Women’s Health Protection Act of 2023 and the Strengthening Tribal Families Act of 2022. Finally, she entertained several questions from the students and expressed the importance of young people getting out to vote. This was just another reminder of how important it is for ACSA members to engage their local legislators.
