{"id":522,"date":"2019-05-07T22:01:53","date_gmt":"2019-05-07T22:01:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/regions.acsa.org\/13\/?page_id=522"},"modified":"2019-08-05T18:40:30","modified_gmt":"2019-08-05T18:40:30","slug":"lgbtq-network-events-history","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/regions.acsa.org\/13\/lgbtq-network\/lgbtq-network-events-history\/","title":{"rendered":"LGBTQ Network Events &amp; History"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4 class=\"pageTitle\"><strong>LGBTQ Leaders Networking Event\u00a0Held in Ventura<\/strong><\/h4>\n<div class=\"right-aligned pages-content-wrapper style-overwrite\">\n<div class=\"pages-left-column-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"pages-left-column pages-column\">\n<div class=\"page-block page-block-text\">\n<div class=\"placeholder-tinymce-text\">\n<div class=\"placeholder-tinymce-text\">\n<p>On May 2, 2016 the ACSA Equity LGBTQ Leaders\u2019 Networking Event took place at the Ventura Beach Marriott in Ventura, CA.\u00a0 With roughly 40 administrators in attendance, 8 school districts represented, superintendents from Ventura to Riverside, and both Certificated and Classified staff, ACSA members who identify as LGBTQ and those who identify as allies, came together for an evening of support, inspiration, listening, collaboration and goal-setting.\u00a0 Howard J. Fulfrost of Fagen, Friedman, and Fulfrost LLP and the event sponsor, welcomed all in attendance and expressed his organization\u2019s commitment to supporting equity and diversity in our public schools.\u00a0 Dr. Trudy T. Arriaga, CLU Distinguished Educator in Residence and Corwin Author\/Consultant provided an insightful keynote that served to remind the audience of the importance of providing opportunity to all staff and students and to stand for what\u2019s right, even if it means singing \u201cacapella\u201d.\u00a0 Her words provided the impetus for attendees to describe the challenges that LGBTQ students and staff face as \u201cinvisible\u201d through the lens of equity and diversity.\u00a0 While there were many rich comments, conversations, and stories from many in attendance, some of the important agreed upon goals developed at the meeting include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Provide an on-going networking system for ACSA LGBTQ and allies via the internet\/ACSA website\/links (<em><strong>NOTE: a new LGBTQ Administrators Network will be housed on the Region 13 website<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>(\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/acsaregion13.edlioschool.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">https:\/\/acsaregion13.edlioschool.com<\/a>\u00a0)<\/li>\n<li>Provide more opportunity for identifying LGBTQ ACSA members and students through better data-collecting resources<\/li>\n<li>Provide more visibility of LGBTQ issues in ACSA publications such as\u00a0<em>EDCAL<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>Leadership<\/em>, particularly when discussing equity and diversity<\/li>\n<li>Include professional development opportunities related to LGBTQ at more ACSA trainings, workshops, and conferences<\/li>\n<li>Continue to provide networking opportunities for LGBTQ and allies as was done for this event<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The May 2 ACSA LGBTQ Leaders\u2019 Network Event planners, ACSA Emeritus members, Steve Bailey and Michael Tapia, along with Region 13 Consultant, Dr. Rich Malfatti wish to thank Nicole Anderson, ACSA&#8217;s first Diversity and Equal Access Executive and Margarita Cuizon, ACSA Membership Director for their consistent and enthusiastic support of equity and diversity for all!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Check out some photos in the Photo Gallery.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"page-block page-block-text\">\n<div>WORKSHOPS AND PRESENTATIONS HISTORY<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>November 10, 2016 Diversity Includes LGBTQ Staff and Students Panel Discussion;
