In October 2023, the California Legislature unanimously passed, and Gov. Gavin Newsom signed, a law requiring handwriting instruction in cursive or \u201cjoined italics\u201d for grades 1-6. It hasn\u2019t been a requirement since 2010, when it was left out of the Common Core National Education Standards.
